Born on the 29th December 1893, Lauri Matia Tilus was one of thousands of Finns that joined the 27th Royal Prussian Jaeger Battalion. He saw combat at several battle on the Eastern Front in 1916-1917 before returning back to Finland for the Civil War. He led a squadron of Cavalry during the conflict and after the war continued his military career.
When the Winter War broke out, he was made commander of the 2nd Company of the Independent Battalion 112. He went missing while leading a delaying action at Tolvajärvi. He left behind a wife and 3 children.
